The United States has always been one and many, as its national motto E pluribus unum highlights. The Austrian Association for American Studies (AAAS) is an academic non-profit organization that sets out to support American Studies in Austria at academic institutions and to promote transatlantic understanding.
Currently, the AAAS has more than 110 active members. They represent the Association at practically all Austrian universities and academic institutions with departments focusing on American Studies. The AAAS is a member of the European Association for American Studies (EAAS).
We organize an annual international conference that is thematically focussed in Austria. In addition, and in collaboration with other organizations and institutions such as Fulbright Austria, the AAAS supports promising projects and young researchers through grants and scholarly awards.
This Code of Conduct is designed to promote the safety and well-being of all members of our community. The AAAS consciously works to diminish and reflect upon implicit and explicit biases, and we strongly condemn any form of intimidation, harassment or bias pertaining to race, ethnicity, gender or gender identity, disability, sexual orientation, class, institution, rank, age, or religious beliefs.
We follow EAAS policy in that we pledge that all participants, members, students, guests, exhibitors, and related event-site vendors and staff be treated with dignity and respect. This policy applies in all AAAS event locations, physical or virtual.
When the Austrian Association for American Studies was founded in 1975, its articles declared a four-fold purpose:
We aim to stimulate the establishment, extension, and intensification of American Studies at Austrian universities and other academic institutions.
the Exchange of Ideas
We aim to allow for the exchange of ideas and information in the field of American Studies.
Research and Scholars
We aim to promote the research activities and plans of Austrian scholars in the field of American Studies.
In and Beyond Austria
We aim to establish contacts with organizations of the same kind in Europe, America, and elsewhere.
